Therapy will be different for each person, depending on their issues and goals. Typically, sessions involve discussing current events, personal history, and progress from previous sessions. Therapy can be short-term or longer-term, and it's common to have regular weekly sessions. Active participation is important for results, and your therapist may suggest activities outside of sessions to support your progress. Therapy is for those ready to make positive changes, open to new perspectives, and willing to take responsibility for their lives.

Therapy can help with mental and emotional problems better than medication alone. An integrated approach to wellness is best for long-term growth and well-being. Your doctor can help you decide whether medication, therapy, or both are the right choice for you.

Exploring the Many Benefits of Online Counseling in Columbia, SC

Studies indicate that therapy is generally effective and offers numerous advantages. Therapy can help you recognize sources of distress, gain better self-understanding, and reach your goals. While traditional in-person counseling is an option for many, it's not for everyone. Here are some of the biggest benefits of online therapy:

 Personalized Therapy Columbia, SC

Access to Support When Living in Remote Areas

Online therapy provides mental health support to individuals living in rural or remote areas who may not have access to traditional in-person therapy due to a lack of local mental health services. Seeking face-to-face therapy in such cases often involves long drives and significant time commitments, which can be challenging for those with busy schedules. However, with reliable internet access, telehealth therapy sessions offer a convenient and relatively quick way to access treatment that might otherwise be difficult to obtain.

 Emotional Wellness Therapy Columbia, SC

Affordable and Convenient

While this wasn't always the case, modern counseling online is usually quite affordable and convenient. You can schedule therapy sessions from the comfort of your own home at times that suit you best. Plus, many states now mandate that insurance providers cover online therapy just like traditional therapy (you should contact your insurance company to see if telehealth counseling is covered). Add that to the fact that telehealth is generally affordable even without insurance coverage, and you can see why so many people check in with their counselors on a weekly and even daily basis.

 Holistic Counseling Columbia, SC

Access to Counseling if You're Physically Disabled

When you're disabled physically, everyday tasks like getting dressed and running errands can be extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, disabled men and women often forego therapy because they can't make it to the therapist's office. Online therapy offers a way for people with disabilities or limited mobility to access mental health care. A therapist working from home may not have the facilities to cater to clients with different needs, but with online counseling, you can still access quality care.

 Wellness Counseling Columbia, SC

Better Availability

Telehealth therapy sessions in Columbia, SC offer an easier way for people to connect with a counselor, especially for those who need help but might be deterred by various obstacles. Individuals struggling with mental health issues like social anxiety disorder, depression, mood disorders, or post-traumatic stress disorder may find it difficult to motivate themselves to seek out a therapist, book appointments, and travel to their office for the initial and subsequent meetings.

If booking an appointment with a traditional therapist isn't in the cards, it could be time to try counseling online.

 Mindfulness Counseling Columbia, SC

Therapy is More Approachable

The internet has made mental health treatment more accessible. People might find it easier to discuss physical health problems with friends and family than mental health concerns. However, online access can help overcome the stigma associated with mental health issues. Teletherapy can also be a valuable tool for learning more about mental health and strengthening your psychological well-being, even if you're not struggling with mental health issues.

When is the Best Time to Seek Counseling Online in Columbia, SC?

If you're reading this, chances are you or a loved one is struggling in life. You may be dealing with added stress at work, grieving after a traumatic life event, or working through a rocky relationship. Dealing with these issues alone can be challenging. But asking for help can be, too. That's especially true when you're dealing with mental health issues. Fortunately, a licensed therapist may be able to provide the support and tools you need to get back to a normal life. If you're wondering whether you need online counseling, keep these situations in mind.

1

Living with Substance Abuse Problems

Dealing with addictions, whether it's substance abuse or behavioral addictions like gambling, can feel incredibly daunting. Therapy is an essential part of the recovery process as it delves into the underlying causes of these issues. With help from remote therapists, you develop skills to help maintain sobriety and prevent relapses. For example, if you're struggling with alcohol addiction, an online therapist can help you identify triggers and teach you new, healthier ways to cope with those triggers instead of using alcohol.

2

Dealing with Relationship Issues

Relationship struggles can be a huge motivating factor for seeking therapy. These issues may involve friends, romantic partners, or family members. For instance, a couple may turn to couples counseling to address communication or trust issues. An online counselor can assist individuals in resolving these issues and developing improved communication skills, boundaries, and coping strategies.

3

Symptoms of a Mental Health Condition

Conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, ADHD, and PTSD can significantly disrupt daily life. Symptoms can manifest as constant feelings of worry or frequent headaches. Therapy, along with medication or lifestyle adjustments, can be an effective treatment for mental health. For example, a person with anxiety might learn relaxation techniques to manage stress levels with the help of a therapist. Similarly, someone experiencing depression may learn coping skills to maintain a more positive outlook on life.

4

New Challenges in Life

Dealing with common - albeit challenging - events in life, like losing a job, coping with grief, or undergoing major changes, can be very disruptive. If you find yourself losing interest in your usual activities, it could be a sign of a mental health condition like major depressive disorder. Therapy offers essential support and guidance for managing these issues, which can help individuals overcome their obstacles. For instance, a person grieving the loss of a loved one may benefit from online counseling as they navigate through their emotions. Similarly, someone who has relocated to a new city might find online therapy beneficial as they adapt to their new home, community, and workplace.

5

Trauma from Childhood

Childhood trauma can have a lasting impact on people as they mature. Virtual therapy with a licensed professional can assist people in processing these experiences and recovering from them, which may help them comprehend and address any existing issues. For instance, individuals who experienced neglect as children can work through feelings of abandonment in therapy, potentially alleviating the anxiety they may be feeling in their romantic relationship.

A shooting victim’s body was found in a South Carolina road Saturday, and a search is underway for a killer, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

D’ante Archie, a 20-year-old Sumter County resident, died from the injuries he suffered in a shooting, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said Sunday.

At about 9:50 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a 911 call about an unconscious man lying in the 5000 block of Byas Road near a home, the sheriff’s office said. That’s near the Wedgefield area of Sumter County.

The victim, later identified as Archie, died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office. A vehicle that was parked nearby in the road belonged to Archie, the sheriff’s office said.

No other injuries were reported, but Archie’s death might be related to another shooting, according to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Anthony Dennis, who also responded to the scene, said another shooting was reported on Duffie Drive at about 2 a.m. That’s less than a mile from where Archie’s body was discovered.

Further information about the 2 a.m. shooting, and if anyone was injured, was not available.

There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in Archie’s death. Information about a motive for that shooting was not available.

No arrests have been reported by the sheriff’s office, which is continuing to investigate the death along with the coroner’s office. An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

“Our investigators are gathering evidence and interviewing eyewitnesses, and we are only in the early stages of our investigation,” Dennis said in a news release.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-436-2000, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.

A Hollywood star has joined in the efforts to search for missing Broadway dancer and Columbia native Zelig Williams.

“Please … if anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of Zelig Williams please reach out to your local authorities,” actor Hugh Jackman wrote in an Instagram story on Thursday. “Zelig we love you and are praying for your safe return.”

Jackman’s message amplified the search and got the attention of national news.

“It’s my only child,” Kathy Williams, Williams’ mother, told “Good Morning America.” “That’s why I want him home with me.”

Jackman posted about Williams again on Saturday.

Williams, 28, was reported missing by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department on Oct. 5.

Williams, a 2014 graduate of Dreher High School, has performed on Broadway. He was a cast member of the popular show “Hamilton” in 2016 and appeared in the 2022 production of the Broadway performance of “MJ The Musical” in a variety of roles. He also traveled on Jackman’s world tour, “The Man,” as a vocalist and dancer in 2019.

He was last seen Oct. 3 at his home in the 400 block of Longwood Road in Columbia, the sheriff’s department said, between Bluff and Garners Ferry roads. Williams’ car was found near Congaree National Park in southern Richland County, about 12 miles from his home.

He has not been in contact with family or friends since he was last seen, which the sheriff’s department said is out of character.

The sheriff’s department said Williams has medical issues that require treatment and is in need of prescribed medicine.

Anyone who has seen Williams, or has information about him, is asked to call 911, or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

Thousands in 28 SC counties to receive replacement SNAP benefits after Hurricane Helene, DSS says

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Some relief will soon be on the way to thousands of low income South Carolina families who lost food due to power outages associated with Hurricane Helene, the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) announced on Friday.

The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved a waiver by DSS which automatically provides replacement SNAP benefits to recipients in 28 counties impacted by Helene. Many of the counties are in the Midlands.

“We are just so thankful for the electric utilities, county administrators that helped us collect this information that the federal government requires because these replacement benefits are 100 percent federally funded,” Connelly-Anne Ragley, Chief External Affairs Officer at DSS, said in an interview.

In order to be eligible, residents must already be approved as a recipient of SNAP, which is formerly known as the Food Stamp Program.

SNAP clients must also be in a county where 50 percent of the total population experienced power outages associated with Helene that lasted longer than four hours.

Hurricane Helene passed through the Carolinas leaving thousands without power for hours and even days. Many lost all their perishable items during these outages.

Officials said SNAP recipients residing in the following 28 counties will automatically be issued a replacement of 55% of their September benefits, as determined by the federal government:

If eligible, no documentation is required.

The replacement benefits should be on EBT cards next week, DSS said.

“We hope that this process will simplify and allow folks to get the benefits, have those automatically put back on their cards on or before Tuesday, October 15,” Ragley said.

Officials caution that calling local county DSS offices, or the state office, will not speed up the process.

SNAP clients in the remaining 18 counties not included in the mass replacement waiver can still apply for individual assistance.

To apply, residents need to submit a form along with some proof indicating that they had a prolonged power outage. It could be a letter from a landlord, insurance company or utility provider.

The deadline to submit this has been extended to October 26th.

“Technically under rules of the federal government, you have two weeks from the event to file that affidavit of loss and the individual letter,” Ragley said. “Two weeks from the event is today. So DSS for those counties not involved in the 28-county mass replacement waiver, we asked federal government for additional time for those other outlying counties for those individuals to submit that individual application.”

Those applying can do so here.

A full list of the forms of verification that can be used to show that homes were in the affected areas is listed here:

For those who are not SNAP-eligible, organizations like United Way of the Midlands are working to meet people’s needs during this difficult time..

The local nonprofit launched the Neighbors United Drive to replenish local food pantries and deliver aid to the counties in the western part of the state that were hardest-hit by Helene.

“From what we’ve seen with previous disasters that have hit our community, like the floods of 2015 and the hurricanes that have come through, most recently including Helene, it’s just we can do so much more when we work together,” Jennifer Moore, United Way of the Midlands’ VP of Community Impact, said.

The Neighbors United Drive runs through Monday, October 14.

Those interested can drop off nonperishable food, hygiene products and cleaning supplies at their office. The address is 1818 Blanding Street in Columbia, and collection hours on Monday will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Anyone can also make a monetary donation to United Way of the Midlands.

South Carolina’s largest food bank Harvest Hope, which is based in the Midlands, is set to receive some of these donations.

Harvest Hope CEO Erinn Rowe said crises like Helene can create food insecurity in the community, and the food bank is there to offer services to all who may need it.

The organization offers an on-site emergency food pantry to serve neighbors daily from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M.

COLUMBIA, SC

On top of the defeat dealt to the Gamecocks by Ole Miss last Saturday, Columbia was also dealt a few stings by one national media correspondent.

Lucy Rohden visited South Carolina’s capital city on game day for a recurring segment on the Dan Le Batard Show where Rohden attends a college football game of the week.

In the five-minute segment, Rohden takes in the tailgating scene around Williams-Brice Stadium before USC’s 27-3 loss to the Rebels.

Did she have a good time? “Not really,” Rohden says in the video. “The highlight of the trip was watching Alabama lose on my phone.”

That experience might have been colored by her previous visits to the Columbia campus.

“I did tour here when I was going to college and I decided not to go (to USC),” Rohden said, “and I’m glad I made that decision, because I did not have fun today.”

“I want to go home,” Rohden says elsewhere in the segment as she walks around the stadium pre-game. “It’s hot as s---. It’s not fun. This is the least SEC school we’ve been to... Oklahoma, more SEC than this.”

At one point, she stands in what appears to be a vacant lot near Williams-Brice, and sarcastically says, “These SEC schools always have so much tradition, so much history and they are just some of the most beautiful college campuses you’ll ever see.” She describes the surrounding area as “what looks to be abandoned cars and factories and warehouses. The stadium is actually pretty cool.”

Later, she speaks to the camera in front of the Cockaboose with a frankly disgusted look on her face.

“All these rich South Carolina fans buy these and tailgate in them,” she says of the train cars. “Are they beautiful to look at? Absolutely. Vibes? Bad. Not good. I’m just gonna say it. I liked Clemson better.”

Later, she interviews some fans, primarily to make fun of the team’s nickname. When she finds some rowdy Gamecock fans, she proclaims, “Finally, some energy!”

Columbia attorney, lawmaker and USC grad Seth Rose watched the video, and said Rohden’s impression of the university is at odds with the record number of students applying to enroll as Gamecocks every year.

“I’m not sure who this correspondent tailgated with or what her opinion of a good pre-game is, but the atmosphere around Gamecock football and its athletics programs is legendary, and it’s one of the reasons I decided to attend USC,” Rose said.

Rohden’s visit wasn’t all bad. Rohden did have some good things to say about the Soda City Market during a trip downtown.

“This is one of my favorite college football traditions that I don’t even believe is a tradition, it’s just a happy little coincidence,” Rohden said of the Main Street market, which she referred to as the Columbia’s farmer’s market. “I don’t know why we haven’t figured out the farmer’s market/football combo. Perfect!”

But the rest of the reporter’s visit to Columbia seems to have been a disappointment, as she sums up in the video.

“We go on this trips with the intention of showing you what makes each of these schools special,” Rohden said. “And when it comes to what makes South Carolina special, not f------ s---. They should call it Mid-Carolina. The Mid-Cocks.”

Country music superstar Kane Brown will bring his upcoming tour to Columbia for a concert, promoters said Thursday.

The five-time American Music Awards winner will bring “The High Road Tour” to Colonial Life Arena on April 24, 2025.

Tickets will go on sale to the public on Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.com, but some presale events will begin next Tuesday and can be accessed by preregistering at kanebrownmusic.com.

Any tickets that are still available can be purchased at the Colonial Life Arena box office on the following “Ticket Tuesday.”

Information about ticket prices was not available.

Brown is scheduled to be joined in Columbia by support acts Mitchell Tenpenny and Ashley Cooke.

The tour, which will kickoff in San Diego, is scheduled to make 23 stops, but the performance in Columbia is currently the only concert slated for South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia.

Brown has previously been named “the future of country music,” by Billboard, and was dubbed as one of 100 most influential people in the world in 2021 by Time magazine.

He first broke onto the scene in 2016 with his self-titled, 3X Platinum, chart-topping debut album, promoters said. That album featured two of the most-streamed country songs of all time — the Diamond-selling “Heaven,” 9X Platinum “What Ifs.”

“One Mississippi,” “One Thing Right,” and “Thank God,” with Katelyn Brown are among Brown’s other well-known songs.

His sophomore album “Experiment” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in 2018, and was followed by the “Mixtape Vol. 1,” which earned Brown an ACM Award nomination for Album of the Year and an ACM win for Video of the Year,” according to promoters.

Brown has sold more than 3,660,000 albums, and has been streamed 6,236,843,668 times according to online records.
