Exploring the Many Benefits of Online Counseling in Atlanta, GA

Studies indicate that therapy is generally effective and offers numerous advantages. Therapy can help you recognize sources of distress, gain better self-understanding, and reach your goals. While traditional in-person counseling is an option for many, it's not for everyone. Here are some of the biggest benefits of online therapy:

 Personalized Therapy Atlanta, GA

Access to Support When Living in Remote Areas

Online therapy provides mental health support to individuals living in rural or remote areas who may not have access to traditional in-person therapy due to a lack of local mental health services. Seeking face-to-face therapy in such cases often involves long drives and significant time commitments, which can be challenging for those with busy schedules. However, with reliable internet access, telehealth therapy sessions offer a convenient and relatively quick way to access treatment that might otherwise be difficult to obtain.

 Emotional Wellness Therapy Atlanta, GA

Affordable and Convenient

While this wasn't always the case, modern counseling online is usually quite affordable and convenient. You can schedule therapy sessions from the comfort of your own home at times that suit you best. Plus, many states now mandate that insurance providers cover online therapy just like traditional therapy (you should contact your insurance company to see if telehealth counseling is covered). Add that to the fact that telehealth is generally affordable even without insurance coverage, and you can see why so many people check in with their counselors on a weekly and even daily basis.

 Holistic Counseling Atlanta, GA

Access to Counseling if You're Physically Disabled

When you're disabled physically, everyday tasks like getting dressed and running errands can be extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, disabled men and women often forego therapy because they can't make it to the therapist's office. Online therapy offers a way for people with disabilities or limited mobility to access mental health care. A therapist working from home may not have the facilities to cater to clients with different needs, but with online counseling, you can still access quality care.

 Wellness Counseling Atlanta, GA

Better Availability

Telehealth therapy sessions in Atlanta, GA offer an easier way for people to connect with a counselor, especially for those who need help but might be deterred by various obstacles. Individuals struggling with mental health issues like social anxiety disorder, depression, mood disorders, or post-traumatic stress disorder may find it difficult to motivate themselves to seek out a therapist, book appointments, and travel to their office for the initial and subsequent meetings.

If booking an appointment with a traditional therapist isn't in the cards, it could be time to try counseling online.

 Mindfulness Counseling Atlanta, GA

Therapy is More Approachable

The internet has made mental health treatment more accessible. People might find it easier to discuss physical health problems with friends and family than mental health concerns. However, online access can help overcome the stigma associated with mental health issues. Teletherapy can also be a valuable tool for learning more about mental health and strengthening your psychological well-being, even if you're not struggling with mental health issues.

A Note from ZenZone Health: If you or a loved one is experiencing suicidal thoughts, contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 on your phone. You can contact this number 24/7, day or night.

When is the Best Time to Seek Counseling Online in Atlanta, GA?

If you're reading this, chances are you or a loved one is struggling in life. You may be dealing with added stress at work, grieving after a traumatic life event, or working through a rocky relationship. Dealing with these issues alone can be challenging. But asking for help can be, too. That's especially true when you're dealing with mental health issues. Fortunately, a licensed therapist may be able to provide the support and tools you need to get back to a normal life. If you're wondering whether you need online counseling, keep these situations in mind.

1

Living with Substance Abuse Problems

Dealing with addictions, whether it's substance abuse or behavioral addictions like gambling, can feel incredibly daunting. Therapy is an essential part of the recovery process as it delves into the underlying causes of these issues. With help from remote therapists, you develop skills to help maintain sobriety and prevent relapses. For example, if you're struggling with alcohol addiction, an online therapist can help you identify triggers and teach you new, healthier ways to cope with those triggers instead of using alcohol.

2

Dealing with Relationship Issues

Relationship struggles can be a huge motivating factor for seeking therapy. These issues may involve friends, romantic partners, or family members. For instance, a couple may turn to couples counseling to address communication or trust issues. An online counselor can assist individuals in resolving these issues and developing improved communication skills, boundaries, and coping strategies.

3

Symptoms of a Mental Health Condition

Conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, ADHD, and PTSD can significantly disrupt daily life. Symptoms can manifest as constant feelings of worry or frequent headaches. Therapy, along with medication or lifestyle adjustments, can be an effective treatment for mental health. For example, a person with anxiety might learn relaxation techniques to manage stress levels with the help of a therapist. Similarly, someone experiencing depression may learn coping skills to maintain a more positive outlook on life.

4

New Challenges in Life

Dealing with common - albeit challenging - events in life, like losing a job, coping with grief, or undergoing major changes, can be very disruptive. If you find yourself losing interest in your usual activities, it could be a sign of a mental health condition like major depressive disorder. Therapy offers essential support and guidance for managing these issues, which can help individuals overcome their obstacles. For instance, a person grieving the loss of a loved one may benefit from online counseling as they navigate through their emotions. Similarly, someone who has relocated to a new city might find online therapy beneficial as they adapt to their new home, community, and workplace.

5

Trauma from Childhood

Childhood trauma can have a lasting impact on people as they mature. Virtual therapy with a licensed professional can assist people in processing these experiences and recovering from them, which may help them comprehend and address any existing issues. For instance, individuals who experienced neglect as children can work through feelings of abandonment in therapy, potentially alleviating the anxiety they may be feeling in their romantic relationship.

Patch Staff

GEORGIA — The so-called “comet of the century” has returned to the evening skies over Georgia, but there is not much time to see Comet C/2023A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS before it disappears for another 80,000 years.

The space rock slinging toward Earth from the outer reaches of the solar system made its closest approach to our planet on Saturday, and it should continue to be bright for a few days, especially on Monday and Tuesday.

You’ll be able to see it through the end of October, but it will move higher in the sky and farther away from the sun as the month progresses and become more difficult to see. The comet should be visible to the naked eye in the coming days, but binoculars or a telescope give a better view.

The weather in Georgia calls for sunny days and clear skies each night this week. Temperatures may linger in the mid- to low 40s.

On both nights, you may see a rare phenomenon known as “anti-tail” as Earth crosses through the comet’s orbital plane. It’s an optical illusion: dust particles left behind by the comet appear to point toward the sun, opposite the direction of the comet’s normal tail.

Find out what's happening in Atlantawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

To see the comet, look to the western horizon about 45 minutes after sunset. The comet will be located along an imaginary line between the bright planet Venus and the bright star Arcturus.

On Monday, the comet will remain visible for about an hour and 20 minutes, about 20 minutes longer than on Sunday. On Tuesday, the comet will be visible for several minutes longer, for about an hour and 45 minutes.

The comet will again be visible Wednesday in the same approximate location and will set within two hours. The comet will remain in the sky longer as the month goes on, but as it gets farther away from Earth, won’t be as easy to see.

By Halloween, the comet will no longer be visible with the naked eye, according to Sky & Telescope, but comet watchers may be able to see it through binoculars until early November.

As Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS made its closest approach to the sun in September, it was visible in the predawn sky. As the view shifted to the evening sky as it came within 44 million miles of Earth on Saturday, the view shifted to the evening sky.

Comets are frozen leftovers in what’s known as an Oort Cloud, a vast spherical region at the edge of our solar system from its formation billions of years ago. They heat up as they swing toward the sun, releasing their characteristic streaming tails.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was picked up last year by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS, at the Tsuchinshan Chinese Observatory in Purple Mountain, China. Scientists estimate the long-period comet has been making its way toward the inner solar system for about 80,000 Earth years at a speed of about 180,610 miles per hour.

The last humans to have seen the comet would have been the Neanderthals.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.

Temps in ATL could increase to at least 3 degrees more than the historical national average. See what this could do to your heating bill.

Patch Staff

GEORGIA — How cold and snow will the upcoming winter be in Georgia? A new AccuWeather 2024-25 winter forecast released this week predicts a warm kickoff to the cold season.

The private weather company said in its forecast, released Monday, that winter will have some “meteorological twists and turns” that could bring bursts of heavy snow and blasts of bitterly cold air.

Meteorological winter begins on Sunday, Dec. 1, and astronomical winter begins on Dec. 21, the date of the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year.

The South is one of the few regions where the warmest temperatures could linger from December to February.

This will be due to warmer-than-normal temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico waters, a La Niña maintaining a storm track in the North and air from the mid-Pacific blowing through the Plains and East, AccuWeather said. These factors will minimize the chance of cold air to live in the South.

Find out what's happening in Atlantawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Temperatures in Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans and Nashville could increase to at least 3 degrees more than the historical national average - lowering heating demand and subsequently possibly decreasing the heating bills.

Georgia’s west coast could be way down in heating demands.

“La Niña will be weak for most of the winter,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist and long-range expert Paul Pastelok said. “A weaker La Niña can allow other signals to drive the pattern, more variability throughout the winter.”

February is the most probable month for the arrival of a polar vortex — a large area of cold, low-pressure air rotating counterclockwise around Earth’s poles that can expand in the winter and send cold air southward. However, there’s less certainty this year about when, or if, the extreme cold air will make it to the continental U.S.

Most areas in the Northeast and Midwest will see more snow this year than last, with predictions returning to near historical averages in cities such as Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Buffalo, New York.

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and other Midwest states could also see an uptick in snow. However, periods of snowy, cold weather could be broken up by the arrival of milder air from the Pacific flows across the country, beginning in early 2025, according to AccuWeather.

Winter is expected to feel like an extension of fall in the South, central southern Plains states, through the Mississippi Valley and up the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. When storms do arrive, they could bring a heightened risk of severe weather.

“You need to be aware of severe weather in the winter. We’ve seen in the past damaging thunderstorms in December, January, and February,” said Pastelok. “With mild air masses coming out of the west during the month of January, we could see the potential for severe weather farther north into places like Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee. As the jet stream dips farther south in February, we could start to see more severe weather in the Gulf coast states with warmer air and warmer waters from the Gulf of Mexico.”

Mild weather is expected to continue across parts of the West, with the frequency of rain (or snow in the Mountains) could increase in November and December

“I think skiing in the West is looking really good,” Pastelok said. “I think it’s going to get kick-started right for the holiday season.”

The ski season in the mountains of Southern California, northern Arizona and New Mexico could come to an early end, but conditions look good in the Pacific Northwest and central Rockies.

That’s what happened in the La Niña winter of 2022-23 when nearly 40 atmospheric rivers hit the western U.S., many of which impacted California.

It was nearly $1,000 Branaita Jones says a thief took from her Georgia SNAP account hundreds of miles away.

“I called the food stamp people and they said somebody took my food stamps in New York,” Jones told Channel 2′s Investigative Reporter Ashli Lincoln.

The Department of Human Services says recipients like Jones are one of thousands who’ve reported stolen funds from their EBT cards.

“Children hungry. I want to cry so bad. It hurt my feelings so bad when they took my stamps,” she said.

The Georgia Department of Human Services announced plans last October to help Georgia food stamp beneficiaries who were victims of fraud. In the time since they’ve replaced about $3 million in benefits they say were stolen or skimmed.

The announcement focused on how Georgians who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funding whose benefits were stolen.

DHS told Channel 2 Action News that 7,040 claims for replacement benefits had been submitted since Oct. 19, 2023, and more than 5,600 had been approved, according to data through Sept. 15.

MORE STORIES FROM 2 INVESTIGATES:

Since last fall, DHS said they’d issued “more than $2.9 million in replacement benefits.”

All of the claims resulted from “SNAP benefits being skimmed or stolen by other fraudulent means.”

To protect their SNAP benefits, DHS said beneficiaries should:

If you think you’ve been the victim of a scam involving your public benefits, DHS says to contact their Office of Inspector General at 877-423-4746, option 4, or email them.
